You'll find what you need in either the IIgs Firmware Reference or the
later IIc Tech Ref, both of which Sheppy sells.
There was a 'protocol converter' addendum manual which covered the
upgraded IIc ROMs that also has it.
Are you planning a 'dd' style command for your multitasking OS ?

As Antoine said, it's an IO Error if that's #39 decimal. Otherwise,
it's a device specific return code.
SlotScan is probably sending device specific SmartPort control codes -
I suspect to determine if the target device understands the SmartPort-
>SCSI encapsulation method, or perhaps if there's a UniDisk 3.5"
attached.
