Stike that last sentence...

The II series COULD have been updated to be equal to what the Mac has
become HAD APPLE WANTED TO.

The PC makers were able to build on the 8088 (of which the II was
clearly better) continuously...and their existing users...and now that
architecture is the dominant one!

If you used a IIGS at the time it was introduced and compared it to a
Macintosh Plus, also the same time, the IIGS was better in several
ways (not all, thanks to deliberate stunting by Apple).

Then there is the ARM based Apple II that the Steve Jobs led Apple
cancelled. The 6Mhz ARM RISC processor powered Apple II could
outperform the Macintosh AND kept the installed base of users
happy, but Apple wanted the "next big thing." Are you saying that
this RISC processor combined with the IIGS' graphics and sound
could not have been upgraded to become equal to what the Mac is?

I don't want Apple or Mac dead, but be realistinc here. The ARM
has been upgraded & is still around today in a vastly faster and
superior form. The Ensoniq chips have been upgraded and have
been used in Taito arcade units and Disney amusement parks.

What you are saying is equivalent to advocating Intel kill the
x86 architecture in 1986 or Microsoft make Windows 95 Win
3.1 incompatible at the beginning. Do you think Wintel would be
the dominant units today if they did that?

Good business sense is not "Next Big Thing" fever...

(And now, if the Gemulator continues to be a great Mac emulator,
the PC may subsume any advantage the Mac has left! See
http://www.emulators.com/ for a possible future of Macintosh!)
