     You have definitely picked a tough docs search challenge. The first
Universe is a really old game.

     There may be a way to get first-class documentation. Omnitrend is
still in business (doing telecom stuff- http://www.omnitrend.com ).

     Even better, Tom Carbone is still running things. He put a lot of
work into the Universe series and may be willing to send you docs for
the first Universe.

     When you talk with Tom, you might mention that new Apple II users
would be interested in his games and ask if he minds having them
uploaded to A2 ftp sites like Ground and Asimov.
