Do you have a hard drive?  If not, you won't be able to use the current
version of AppleWorks anyway.  AppleWorks 5.0 and later can be installed
from 5.25" disks onto a hard drive, but cannot be run from 5.25" disks.
AW5.x also needs at least 256K of RAM.

If you only have 128K of RAM and 5.25" drives, you should try to get
hold of AppleWorks 2.1, which will give you a reasonably good set of
features without too much inconvenience (and a reasonable amount of
usable memory - 55K).  AppleWorks 3.0 has more features, but at a cost -
lots of disk swapping if you use more than one module, and only 40K of
desktop space.

AppleWorks 4.0.x is almost unusable on the minimal machine (20K desktop
space, far too much disk swapping).

As far as what you can buy: I expect Scantron Quality Computers is not
selling versions prior to 5.1 any more.


Your best option may be to find someone who has stopped using their
machine and is prepared to sell you their copy of an older version of
AppleWorks (make sure you get the full package).
