They are soldered in...

One trick to repair the IIe without knowing how to solder is to piggyback
the new chip on the bad one.  Get a pack of double sided foam adhesive
(commonly called "mounting squares") and cut a small piece just small
enough to fit under the new chip.  With the foam adhesive on the bottom
of the new chip, piggyback the new RAM chip onto the bad one making
sure the alignment is correct, all legs make contact, no legs bridge
two different legs (no shorts), and the chip is not reversed 180 degrees.

I once fixed a IIe with 2 bad RAM chips this way and it worked for six
years before something else broke...
