The better approach would be to properly desolder the old chips and put the
new ones in their place. Rat Shack has tools for this purpose that are
relatively inexpensive (such as a desoldering iron, similar to a soldering
iron but with a hollow tip and squeeze bulb, for under $10 the last time I
looked).
