As Toshi indicates, removing the metal shield will allow the CIA to
monitor all of your GS activity. Fortunately, the CIA just monitors PC
activity now.
Another purpose of the shielding is to let the GS pass some kind of
FCC Radio/TV interference test. It also serves as a dust trap to prevent
your computer from running too cool. Well, your GS passed the FCC tests
and it is okay to run at cooler temperatures; so, now you can get rid of
the stupid thing.
By the way, I did some checking of radio and TV interference before
and after removing all of the metal shielding (top, back, bottom, ...).
There was no obvious difference-- there is some interference on some
stations with or without. Meanwhile, ventilation is much improved,
cables don't get sliced up when I try to pass them through slots in the
back, the case is much easier to clean, and the chance of metal
shielding causing a short is eliminated.
