It is very simple really.  Start up the IIgs and make sure you see either
ROM 1 or ROM 3 on the screen.  If not, go to www.allelec.com and
order a ROM 1 chip (the minimum version needed to run the OS).

Second, press Open-Apple (otherwise known as the Command Key)
Control and Esc together and look at the RAM control panel.  If you
have more than 1.125MB, go to www.allelec.com and order System
6.0.1.  If you have less memory, you can order 4MB to 8MB from
www.allelec.com.

You can also use the computer as a IIe.  Just order ProDOS
system disks from www.allelec.com.  To use it as a IIgs, you need
around 1.125MB, preferably at least 4MB to do anything useful or
fun. (Well, 2MB will work on many things, but no one sells such
an oddball memory size anymore....4MB will let you work and have
fun.)
