That means it requires a GeoPort-compatible Macintosh.  The ninth pin
provides power to the modem.

I assume this is also part of the GeoPort interlock mechanism, to
prevent the plug from being damaged if you try to plug it into an
incompatible port.

You would have to remove the piece of metal and the ninth pin.  It is
probably easier to open the modem up, desolder the cable at the modem
end (noting where all the signals go) and replacing it with a standard
Mini-Din-8 cable.  You would also need to provide a +5VDC power supply
from somewhere (one option would be to build an ADB pass-through
connector, with the +5V line taken out to the modem).
