One word: forks.

And yes, some foo' did once run LemminGS or Diamonds through PKZIP and
post on an web archive once.  Needless to say it didn't work.

The question should be:  why does anyone use a proprietary format on a
file that is of universal use/appeal?  It really peeves me when I find
a file I *know* is TXT/JPG/GIF/etc posted somewhere as either self-
extracting file or an archiving scheme that I can't get into properly.
