I think you need to reinstall because "Welcome to Spectrum v2.1"
screen should be all white with the menu bar at the top and the
Spectrum icon to the left and right of the welcome text.  It should
also play a sound file of a female voice saying "Welcome".

I can't help with the VT100 stuff because I don't use a shell account
with my IIgs.
