   You'll definitely need a modem for starters. Internal modems for
the //e topped off at 2400 baud, but if you get a serial board such as
the Super Serial Card, you can plug in an external serial modem, such
as one from a PC. 14.4 is probably as fast as you could go with a base
//e, but that's fast enough for email. 

   The bigger problem that you might have, based on your email
address, is that AOL dropped support for Apple IIs a long time
ago. Can't use them at all. Fortunately, there are many more ISPs that
exist and don't unilaterally drop features. You'll need to find an ISP
with a dialup shell account (no SLIP or PPP on the //e), and a comm
