Chat System for GS lab?

Hi,

I run a GS lab in a middle school and we are currently working on the
dreaded Keyboarding Unit.

Just got to thinking, there has to be a way to set up one of these old
appletalked labs of GS's so that the kids could 'chat' with each other. 
Talked to our District support staff and they were clueless (only one
person there even remembers how to work with these old machines).

Anyway, does anyone know if there is a software solution out there
(preferably freeware, or public domain) that would work for this sort of
project?  The lab runs off a Quadra 610 AppleTalk server.
