More often than not it looks like a phone cord. The most common way to build
a localtalk network is with phonenet boxes which are sold at just about any
computer store.

You need to make sure that Appletalk is enabled in the chooser and that some
version of Laserwriter 8 is installed on the Mac. The IIgs needs a buncha 
Appletalk support software installed plus Appletalk turned on in the control
panel. You're supposed to be able to connect two nodes with a printer cable,
but it's moot since you want to use three. Get some localtalk boxes, verify
that your systems are set up properly, and try it again.
