     It sounds like you may have spoken with store persons who do not
have much experience with computers. Whether or not a computer stuff
store person knows it, practically all such places will have a "Disk
Drive Cleaning Kit", a "Head Cleaning Diskette", or something similar.

     Radio Shack's 1998 catalog lists a "Disk drive cleaner kit" on page
268. The kit includes 5.25" and 3.5" cleaner diskettes and 1/2 oz. of
cleaning fluid. Just go down to Radio Shack and get one.
