"Check Startup Device" is normal if there is no bootable disks in
any connected and enabled drives. With no connected drives, of course
it'll flag an error. Connect just the keyboard and monitor and hold
down the option key on powering on to enter the control panel and then
the slots settings. Set all the slot settings to the default
(checked), turn power off, and reconnect the drive to see if things
work.
