   The system software can certainly be on a disk with applications,
or it can be separate. As the system software bloated from about 8% of
a disk to being able to eat all of an 800K disk for breakfast, apps
became less and less likely to be selfbooting. The comp.sys.apple2
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) at
http://www.visi.com/~nathana2/faq/csa2.html section 7.2 convers where
you can either download (must be thru a mac, but if it's a recent mac,
it may flake out) or get a legitimate copy of a bootdisk for use.
