I've noticed my //gs becoming flaky over the years. Here's my hypothesis:

I've noticed small explosion occasionally (maybe once every three months)
in my apartment whenever the GS is on. They always sound like small ladyfinger
firerackers going off, e.g. roughly *spak!* 

One day, I was disassembling my GS to do something or other, and I noticed
something really strange - a lot of the surface mount capacitors underneath
the logic board, near the slots especially, had exploded. I suspect that's
the reason for my occasional system crashes - the power is no longer being
filtered properly to certain chips on the logic board. I haven't replaced them
because I don't use my GS very much any more. 

You may want to check if your logic board has the same problems, and if so,
take a soldering iron to the exploded caps and replace them.
