The Extended 80 Columns Card is not a video card, all it does is
provide an extra 64K of memory which the Apple IIe accesses via bank
switching (the original auxiliary slot 80 Columns Card was much the
same but provided only 1K of memory). That extra 1K in both cases
provides enough space to perform a mirroring technique to display
80x24 text; the 64K is used to mirror two Hi-Res pages and double
the resolution and colors. In otherwords plugging in that auxiliary
memory expands the video capabilities of the Apple IIe (or use a
feature already built-in but Apple made you buy the extra memory).
Even without the card installed, you can connect your Apple IIe
to a composite monitor or TV/VCR using the video out RCA connector
in back and it will produce color graphics. If you want RGB output
however, that requires a different auxiliary card (e.g. AE RamWorks
with RGB option or the Apple Extended 80/RGB card).
