Actually, IBM did itself in.  When IBM first started making PCs the
place they
did it from was Boca Raton.  Within a year or two, the BR plant was
making almost
as much as the MainFrame and Mini-Computer areas.  The big-wigs with IBM
then stepped
in and took back over control of BR which caused all sorts of problems
(read that
as corporate in-fighting).  IBM eventually determined that their best
bet was to
simply lease the rights to make clones out to others.  They make a lot
of money
from doing so.

But I know that you are right in the "no competition" area.  I've been
saying that
for a long time.  Apple simply has no competition.  It's a monopoly. 
Only they
don't want it known that Apple is a monopoly because that could mean bad
things for
them.
