    I've done this before and it works just fine. My Apple IIc sits
next to an Apple IIe with a DuoDisk, and in the past if I required 
a second floppy drive, I'd just pull the cable from the back of the
IIe and plug it into the IIc. That IIc happens to be an original ROM
version 255, so it only saw the first Duo's drive and ignored the 
second. I also have a Disk IIc external hanging around so I usually 
just use that now (it comes in more handy for my IIc Plus though, 
since 98% of my 8-bit software is on 5.25 disks).

    Be aware the DuoDisk is not compatible with the ROM 3 Apple IIgs.
I thought my system was an isolated case, but a few weeks ago I came
across a note from the Apple Tech Info Library which states it is a
problem with all ROM 3's. I just keep an Apple 5.25 drive on each of
my GS's, but keep it disabled as I might use them maybe once or twice
in an entire year (lately the same has been true of my Apple 3.5 
drive as well, it's just my SuperDrive which has remained active as 
a bridge between my IIgs and 486; and will continue with the same job
on P133 I just assembled to replace it. :)
