The Apple IIGS's power switch is on the back, left side of the
computer. Unlike some computers made by Apple, the keyboard
button that corresponds to the "power on" switch in those
other computers is the reset key on the GS.
However, you pressed the power button on the CPU so....

Gary, a sound from the power supply when the power is switched
on suggests the power supply needs replacing. See Alltech
(http://www.allelec.com/) for a replacement or, for a more
heavy duty unit, contact Dr. Steve Buggie for his "Buggie"
power supplies (see contact info in the A2 FAQ...do a web
search for Apple II and see the last section of the FAQ for
Dr. Buggie's email address).
