You can only boot from the first drive in Slot 6 or Slot 5 with
your setup. Your second 3.5" floppy drive will work, you just can't boot
from it. Since it's set to scan, just leave the 5.25" drive empty and
have your system disk in the 3.5" (Drive 1). The machine will boot from
that after a few seconds. OR, you can set the startup slot to 5.

I don't have any URL's handy, but there are plenty of Apple II(gs)
ftp sites out there. Just do a search...
If you have a Mac lying around, setup an File Sharing network with
Mac System 7.x(or 8.x) and the GS can use your Mac's hard drive as a base
for launching apps (not as fast as a hard drive, but cheaper than buying a
drive if you already have a Mac lying around). If you have AppleShare
3.x, I believe you can also have the GS boot from the server (or so I've
heard). At any rate, have fun and enjoy the GS, they're fun little
machines. :)
