More information on this and many other subjects can be found at
the comp.sys.apple2 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) at
http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html If you're using a modem
faster than 9600 on an Apple II, you will need a 'hardware
handshaking' modem cable as opposed to cheaper 3-wire ones. Most
cables sold today are fully wired, so you can try those until you
notice some symptoms likedropped chars. Currently, you'll get your
best support from a dialup shell account, where you can use both
Spectrum Internet Suite
(http://www.sevenhills.com/applesoftware/iigs/sis/) if you have a GS
with HD and 4MB ram, or you can use all the many unix shell commands
and tools to get a great all-text (i.e. all the *content* is there,
drop the fluff) connection in either case.

   With Richard Bennett's Marinetti,
(http://www.zip.com.au/~kashum/marinetti/), you can use SLIP
connections (PPP may be forthcoming) with the same set of tools
above-- telnet to a shell account or use it with Spectrum Internet
Suite.
