My best guess is it was a programmable calculator similar to the TI-58
I picked up at Value Village a while back. Has an actual ROM module
that can be replaced with another module and is loaded with programs
for statistical stuff, and other functions... Even has a Hi-Lo game
and a blackjack game...
I paid about $1.50 for it, but back then, it would have been quite
pricey, probably like the fancy graphing calculators available today.
