I personally still use ][ and ][ (//e) - emulators because the thing
is well documented and transparent. You simply can find out what's
really going on inside it, from the hardware ref manual of the ][
with the plan of the circuit layout thru the DOS manual describing
the hardware of the disk controller and drive in great detail to
last but not least literature like Beneath Apple Dos (and  ... PRODos)
describing even the state machine used in the disk drive.
Tools like the Bag of Tricks, the mini-assembler, the monitor, ...
There are literally thousands of reasons to still use the Apple ][
and its successors. Ideal for monkeying around with it. A challenge
for the grey matter in Your skull - with a chance, that is. Lots of
games still unsolved/unplayed.
