But the Pentium *is* basically an 8-bit CPU at heart, it simply has 16
and 32-bit extensions. Nobody except Intel regards the 8086 as being a
real 16-bit CPU, and the Pentium situation is closely analogous. Proof of
the point lies in the fact that the Pentium has 8-bit opcodes.

compatible! I can only work with the information I'm given, you know. It

Right, and how many major programs do you know that have nothing but :
move 1000000,d0
loop: move (a0)+,(a1)+

as the entire meat of the program? That's the only situation where your
observation will have a real-world effect. I stand by what I said.

Yippee. Go to <http://www.microchip.com/> and look at the specs of some
of their RISC microcontrollers. They are pipelined Harvard-architecture
microcontrollers with 12-bit, 24-bit (etc) instruction words and 8-bit,
16-bit, 32-bit data file busses. The one I'm using at the moment is
clocked at up to 20MHz. Doesn't make it a blisteringly fast CPU just
"because it has some RISC like features".

This is a lovely meaningless benchmark. The GS's operating system is
radically different from MacOS (it might look similar in some respects,
but it's very different). You can't compare the two. There are a bunch of
other factors too - color depth at which the display was running, size of
the display area, wait states imposed on accessing video memory, and what
custom hardware has to share the same buses.
Why don't you do the same little test on your Intel machine running
MS-Word for DOS (one of the graphical versions)? I bet you the results
are reversed.

Come ON, be realistic. Bernie II is emulating the entire hardware of the
IIgs; graphics, audio, disk I/O. Ask Henrik to give you his 65816 engine
bare and run it flat-out on the same machine. I guarantee you it will be

Few? IBM does it as a matter of routine. Microsoft does it with software.
DEC does it too. It doesn't always make sense to have two products
fighting for the same niche. Basically what you have said in this message
is that Apple shouldn't have made the Mac, they should have made a Mac
and called it a IIgs "plus" or something.

And you've never heard of OS/2 for PowerPC? I'm not surprised, but it
exists. Believe me there are few things in the world I despise more than
the iAPx86 series of CPUs.
