   You are doing something drastically wrong. I just redownloaded the
disks from Apple's ftp site, and GSHK 1.1 opened them just fine. The
problem is purely on your end, due to either buggy software or your
not downloading in BINARY MODE AT EACH AND EVERY STEP. You don't do
the binary transfers, you're pretty much guaranteed to scramble the
files.

   I suggest you read the comp.sys.apple2 Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQ) section 5 at http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html until
the importance of following clear directions is impressed upon you.
Ask your local unix admins if you need further instructions on getting
everything in 'binary mode'.

   There is no need whatsoever to trim anything off the files'
headers; the files are prefectly intact as is. [They used to have some
Macintosh- induced garbage headers that needed to be trimmed, but
what's there is prefectly fine.]
