Welcome to comp.sys.apple2. I invite you to read the
comp.sys.apple2 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) at
http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html It has links to the
Applesoft Basic and DOS & Commands FAQs which you might find useful
in your case.

Basically, if you didn't boot off a disk, you're going to have
major trouble writing to disk, as the code for disk i/o (especially
the output) is only loaded when you boot a disk. Your //e *could* save
to the cassette i/o port, but that's more pain and ancient history
than most would like to go thru.

If you'd like to get a bootdisk, there are several places mentioned
from section 7.2 of the csa2 FAQ; you'd probably want to get in
contact with Steve Cavanaugh and get the $3 modem disk with modem
utils, etc.

The Applesoft Basic FAQ and the rest of my web pages are the most
comprehensive guides you'll find on the internet. I'd eventually like
to expand them to document more, but with people who fall under the
category of "If you can't create, just criticize" I haven't bothered
to do anything more. I recommend you drop by delphi.com for their free
web-based (or $30/YEAR telnet access) accounts that'll let you chat
with people (and especially programmers, whose efforts are
appreciated) who bother to care about the Apple II.
