Randy, the original LaserWriter can accept a direct serial connection
from a IIe with a Super Serial Card.  I know this because, based on
an A+ article, I helped set up a IIe with AppleWriter II and some
WPL macro addons at my local high school some time ago.  Publish-It!
also supports such a direct serial connection (simply click on the
"Apple LaserWriter" radio button under "Printer" and "Super Serial
Card" radio button under "Interface" in the Printer Setup box.) I've
also fooled with GEOS before and with that you just drop in a
Super Serial Card driver and the Postscript driver into the System
folder (GEOS works much like a IIgs or Mac) and it pipes printer
output from all GEOS applications through the Postscript driver.
I am assuming that Springboard Publisher can do this too.

Recent LaserWriters that can accept direct serial would also work,
but they probably won't be as cheap.
