If your college or university is offering shell accounts (which is
what the majority still do) then your Apple IIgs with a slow 2400 baud
modem would be quite acceptable for accessing the Internet. The only
thing you require is software capable of VT-100 emulation (such as
ProTERM 3.1) and your all set.
Although it may not be as respectable speed-wise as a 14.4K data
connection, 2400 baud is usable (in fact, my backup IIgs still has a
2400 baud modem, which I occasionally use to access my account). If
all your doing is reading mail and newsgroups you can get by fine.
