"Tangled Tales" is a good guess, especially with so little information.
In TT the apprentice wizard has his Spell Book wiped clean by his master as
punishment for wasting some valuable Adamantite Dust. However, the lost
powers are fairly minor and easily recovered during the first quest (i.e.
the first "Tale").
Tangled Tales is an excellent long-play adventure packed with
interesting characters and well-designed challenges. The 'flavor' is
distinctly Zorkian; so that playing TT 'feels' much like playing Infocom's
"Enchanter" or "Wishbringer" on a hires screen with pictures. Anyway, it is
probably Origin's best Apple II adventure release.
As Dr. Tom observed, Tangled Tales is on Asimov. (The last time I
checked, it was available in disk image form.) This is fortunate because the
original version incorporated a protection scheme which tended to eat the
game's diskettes.
