I read somewhere that the ROM 3 was specially set up to cope with
running System 4.0. I would expect earlier versions to be unreliable.

The system software is probably OK, but there are bound to be
applications that make assumptions about features in older versions of
the toolsets. As the ROM 3 contains newer versions of most of the
toolsets, the ROM versions will be used in place of the disk versions on
the older system software, and this may introduce incompatibilities.

(For example, there might be problems with the Standard File toolset on
old system software, which is not in ROM on the ROM 3, running with much
later versions of the Window Manager, Control Manager and Dialog
Manager.)
