You can obtain an Apple Unidisk and controller, or you can get a Universal
Disk Controller (UDC) that works with GS-type drives. There is also the
SuperDrive controller, but it is very rare and expensive. The UniDisk and
GS-type drives are compatible with one another. The UDC was an aftermarket
item that worked great with both 5.25 and 3.5 drives, and was marketed by
Laser, AMR, and Vtech. I have had good luck with both AE and AMR drives on
a UDC (haven't had the chance to try an Apple drive).

You can use any DD diskette. Luck using HD-type diskettes varies from very
reliable to very unreliable, with most people falling in the middle where
it usually works but sometimes doesn't. It's generally a really bad idea to
use HD diskettes unless you are using genuine Apple-brand drives, which for
some reason seem to work better with HD media. Even then I would never use
them.
