I'm a firm believer that every apartment should come with an Apple II.
(regardless of the model) ;-)

The GS (big brother to the IIc) can boot and run some MS-DOS software
using a special card called a 'PC Transporter'. The IIc doesn't have this
ability. The IIc runs DOS 3.3 (prior to 1984 OS) and ProDOS (1984 onward
OS).

> How do you list the files?

If you're using ProDOS, from the DOS prompt ']', type CAT. If that
doesn't work, you may have to type CATALOG (with the caps lock down) as
you may be running the older DOS 3.3 operating system. DOS 3.3 uses
both ']' and '>' as prompts depending on the form of basic being used.
The IIc can run both.

> How do you run the programs (some of them boot to a BASIC prompt)?

There are three types of programs; basic using the RUN command, binary
using the BRUN command and text/basic using the EXEC command. SYS files
are only found on ProDOS disks and must be run using the '-' (hyphen)
command. The other files can also be run using the hyphen command, if
you're running ProDOS.

> Does anybody have any old Apple IIc manuals that I could have?

   Try the Internet newsgroup 'comp.sys.apple2.markeplace'.
Occasionally, there are ads selling older manuals and books; sometimes,
people are giving them away to a good home.

> Does anybody know a good place to get apple shareware?

There are many Apple II websites and ftp sites containing good quality
shareware, freeware and public domain. You should check out the Apple II
FAQ first for the most complete information about the II line on the
Internet. It's at:

I hope I've helped. Have fun with the IIc. I do!
