Hello Peter All the questions can be answer yes, now for details

: Hello all,
: I recently got a Apple IIgs from a friend who was going to throw it out.
: I want to try and make it a useful system for my brother to use.
: It is a ROM 01 IIgs, with 1.25 megs or RAM (Expanded with a Applied
: Engineering GS RAM III) I want to expand the IIgs to atleast 2.25 megs,
: 4.25 would be the best. It also has a Datalink 2400bps modem in slot 2.
: Now, on with the questions.
: #1. Where can I buy RAM new for my setup? What is the cost? It coudn't be
: more that $9 a meg.
If I remember correctly the GS-RAM III used 1M x 8 chips (not shore but
if you look at the installed chip and get the number of them you should
be about to upgrade the card.
: #2. I have a AppleTalk network. Can I integrate the IIgs into the network
: and access files of a Macintosh hard drive?
This is the simples thing to do, all you need is system 5.0.4 or system 6.0.1
setup as and appletalk boot disk and set slot 7 to appletalk and slot 1
or 2 also to appletalk plug and appletalk connect into the serial port
you setup for appletalk and using system 7.0 on the MAc enable file sharing.
There are system disk and apple 2 setup disc avaliable on the net from
apple to get you going.
: #3. What would I need to add a standard external
SCSI hard drive?
To get a SCSI Hard drive going you will need a SCSI card in your GS. There
are two good options the Best is the RAMFast from Sequential System it
support a lot of sCSI drives including CD ROM's ZIP and Syquest Drives
and others this card can be purchased new from Sequentail System ( look
for them on the Web) or you can get an Apple SCSI card these are now
second hand but work well.
: #4. Can the IIgs be sped up without overheating the system, and without
: replacing RAM and other things?
You can sppeed you your GS with a TRanswarp GS or ZIP GS you will not
have to replace your RAM. You can get NEw TRANSWARP GS from a Applied
Engineering in Australia (They will also help you with RAM for your RAM
card if you want ) or you can Get a secondhand ZIP GS, the ZIP GS is
easier to setup and get working with most cofigurations of GS's
If you do put an accellerator in your GS then look at getting A FAN as
heat becomes a problem it a well stocked GS.
: #5. Can I use a ADB-powerd modem on the IIgs?
This I would surggest not as the GS power supply is not all that strong.
It is basic design to run the GS and two or three card and the floppy drives
not much more. You can get heary duty power supplies fromMC Price
breakers again you will find them on the Web.
: Sorry about all the questions, I don't know must about the IIgs. Please
: e-mail me with a response, as I can't check newsgroups as much as I would
: like to.
