Firstly, you need a IIgs Port Driver which is compatible with your
printer card. Apple supplies a driver called "Parallel.Card" with the
system software. This supports Apple's own cards, and probably works
with some third-party cards.
Secondly, you need a IIgs Printer Drive which supports your printer.
The only driver supplied by Apple which supports a parallel printer is
the Epson driver, which is for rather old dot matrix Epson printers.
(The ImageWriter driver might work with an Apple DMP.)
For anything more recent, you will probably need an appropriate
third-party driver.

Are you using the right control panel? You must use the graphical
"Control Panels" desk accessory which appears under the Apple menu, and
choose "DC Printer" (Direct Connect Printer). It allows you to select a
printer driver and port driver.
