For a short answer, most IBM monitors (very old ones are the only
ones reported to work) will not work on a standard GS. You can
purchase the 'Second Sight' video board that offers pretty good
emulation of the GS's video with a [S]VGA output, but for the price of
that, you could probably get yourself a used GS monitor.
