HELP!! Trying to get Apple II software to operate on my Windows PC

I stumbled onto a group of Apple II emulators for the PC the other
day, but I cannot figure out how to get the software you download to
run.  I can get the emulator to work, but all it does it sit with the
word APPLE IIe up at the top.  

1-  How do I get it to Boot as my old apple used to?  What files do I
need, and how do I use them?

2-  Most of the archived games I've seen have a .gz extension on them
-- how do I use those?

Any help anyone could offer me in getting these programs to work would
be greatly appreciated.
