It is far from useless.  There are huge libraries of available software that
can do anything imaginable (try ftp.oak.oakland.edu for example).  And all
of this software is free!

Further, CP/M programs were not always written in "Z-80 machine code."  They
were often written in Basic and Pascal, as well as other languages.  And many
CP/M programs were written in 8080 Assembly language, as well as Z-80
Assembly language.  Not too many people wrote in machine code.

Finally, CP/M on an Apple can make use of 5.25 and 3.5 floppies, hard disks,
and just about any other hardware you can think of.  And there was commercial
software;  WordStar was probably the most popular word processor of its time.
