Follow this path to an example of using the SSC in machine lang:

gopher://info.apple.com
  TIL/
    Apple II Software/
      Programming/
        Hardware Issues in Programming/
          Super Serial Cd-w Machine Lang

It is a simple "terminal program" that should get you started.
