It's basically a demo application to show off MIDIsynth (or rather
became that since it never emerged a full and finished MIDI sequencer
as was intended to have been), but yeah, it is pretty neat. :) It's
quite fun if you have a MIDI keyboard to hook up to "play" the GS, or
experiment by modifying instruments to get some interesting effects
(or creating your own with the help of waveLAB).
You must have the beta version (1.0b2 or b3), the official final
version (v1.1) included with System 6 includes a 107K TeachText file
on disk called "Reference". This is the synthLAB manual more or less,
although I never saw the printed manual you could order from APDA to
compare. I can forward you a copy by mail, assuming this is okay.
Oh, in the meantime, there are are sorts of music sequences that
can be played by synthLAB on the Caltech and Ground FTP sites. :-)
