This is tangental, but...  The most overhyped thing I can think of was
the Spartan doodad by Mimic, which turned a Commodore 64 into an Apple
][+.  (holding December 1984 issue of _RUN_, p.82 for reference)  I've
known a lot of Commodore users in my time; none ever owned a Spartan.
