     What happens if you set boot disk to Slot 5, turn OFF the machine, and 
boot a paint or display program (like 816 Paint or SuperPac) from diskette?

     If the display is no longer messed up, the indication is that some 
Init, NDA, screen saver, etc. running in the background is the culprit.
