FOLLOW-UP TO MY MEMO ON IBM SIMMS IN APPLE:
Two readers responded to suggest that no damage was likely to be done by
trying, so I inserted the four 9-RAM simms into my QRAM/Pacemark 4 meg
card and then inserted the card into the Rom 01 IIgs.
It works! The System 6.0.1 finder recognizes the 4 megs of ram, and also
the QRAM diagnostics test also PASSED all the ram tests!
Incidentally, I noticed on the 30-pin SIMMS that I removed from the QRAM/
Pacemark card, there is an empty space for a ninth RAM on the SIMM card.
So, the $5 I paid for the junked Gateway "386" was well worth it! I got
an excellent AT-style 230 watt power supply, and 4 megs of RAM usable in
my IIgs! Plus plenty of jumpers, standoffs, jackscrews, and a
mini-speaker.
The upshot of all this is that if you find a junked IBM compatible, there
is plenty in it that you can use it in your Apple!
CONVERTING THE IBM-STYLE POWER SUPPLY YOU ALREADY OWN, TO RUN YOUR IIE OR
IIGS:
Finally, if you get a good IBM-style power supply and want to convert it
to Bugg-power your Apple II, you have two options:
(a) Ship the unit to me and I will attach the 5 ft Bugg-Power cable for
$14 plus $5.00 return shipping. Cooling fan speed control potentiometer/
knob is an optional extra @ $5.00
OR
(b) Get my "cable-only" 5 ft cable and plug. This allows you to plug the
unit to the cable. It connects to two Molex-4 plugs, the P8 plug, and the
P9 plug. Cost is $14 plus $3 shipping within U.S. Full instructions are
included.

: Last weekend in Albuquerque, I bought a junked Gateway "386" computer,
: made in 1990, to get its power supply.
: I salvaged screws, etc, and also four 30-pin SIMMs from its motherboard.
: QUESTION: I have a QRAM (Pacemark) 4 meg RAM card for IIgs, that takes
: one meg SIMMs. Could these simms from the Gateway 2000 be installed in
: that card?
: I am uncertain of compatibility. The A2/Mac one meg 30-pin SIMMs each
: have 8 cips on the simm, but these from Gateway 386 have NINE chips.
: Would anything be damaged if they were installed in QRAM and tried? I
: dont mind if the QRAM failed to recognize the memory beyond 4 megs, but
: dont want to try if it will zap my ram card or IIgs.
: Also, I salvaged three huge INTEL processors from the Gateway. One says
: 386-33; another says 386-DL.
: Can I resell these on the IBM net? To avoid appearing as a fool, what is
: the likely value of the three chip 386 set? Pins are all in excellent
: condition.
: Please reply to the net and also to my e-mail account buggie@unm.edu
: because I can print only from e-mail.
: --------------------------------------
: P.S. I expect to have e-mail almost daily this week. I whined to the
: dean about e-mail cutoff during the college intersession, and they have
: opened the computer room for 2 hours each day Mon-Thurs.
