The 65C02 architecture represents one of the world's largest installed bases
of 8-bit data bus technology, with a strongly dominated use by the Japanese
in many consumer products. Its general purpose control functions have been
proven ideal for applications in the consumer, medical, industrial, controls,
automotive, and telecommunications fields. Those who thought the 8-bit data
bus was obsolete, will be interested to know (1) the worldwide 8-bit
microcontroller shipments tripled from $588M in 1990 to $1,803M in 1995;
and (2) these 8-bit market quantities represent a sales increase from $2,077M
to $5,634M for the same period*. All WDC microprocessors and
microcontrollers have 8-bit data buses for low power and retain high
performance (8 MIPS) due to its legendary instruction set, address modes and
pipelined architecture. The 6502 has been identified by some, including
Microprocessor Report (12/90), as the first 8-bit RISC microprocessor. The
W65C02S, W65C816S, W65C134S, and W65C265S are immediately available with 100K
price ranging from $2-10.
