   If the tick is in sync with the drive lights flashing from the
Finder, that's just the hardware polling for disk swaps. The differing
loads on the power supply tend to make a number of power supplies for
ROM 01s make such noises. You can verify this for yourself by opening
up the case and disconnecting the internal speaker (as well as any
external speakers) for a minute (no harm in doing so) and seeing if
you have such a problem.

   A few anti-ROM 01 bigots will tell you that the redesigned (and
therefore quieter in the sound output stage) motherboard for the ROM 3
will solve this problem, but if you try this test you may well
determine for yourself that your power supply is the real fault, not
the motherboard. A fair number of power supplies that shipped with ROM
01s have this fault; nothing to really worry about.
