Apple II GS Error?

My Nephew just got an Apple II GS from a friend. When we boot it up, it
gives a "Check Start Up Device" screen. I am an IBM guy and have
no clue what to do. Is it looking for a boot disk? Is it a software or
hardware problem? Any suggestions would be great! If there are any good
web pages that I should look into let me know as well.
