The speedup for the ROM 3 is due to hardware-- ROM is accessed at
~2.8Mhz, RAM at 2.5. If you're spending a lot of time calling
toolsets, the ROM 3 is faster, since more tools are in ROM.
Once you are divorced from the real hardware, who knows what
the case is. Bug the emulator authors directly for details.
