It was certainly welcome, but GS/OS did come far too late in the
GS's life cycle. It took _two full years_ after the release of the GS
for a true 16-bit operating system, and even then it wasn't until the
release of System 5 that Apple optimized it to run at a decent pace,
nearly a full year later.
I never even used GS/OS or the Finder until System 5.0.2, the first
decent and usable release of System Software. It wasn't bad enough that
Apple refused to enhance the hardware, they also took their sweet time
with the OS. System 6 _really_ started to show what the machine was
capable of (6 years late) and it was disappointing that after reaching
that height, they just halted all development. Imagine what could have
been if System 6.5 or System 7.0 were developed. :/
